Panama City Church Start. Recently the first meeting was held with a group of students from the Chitre church who now attend universities in Panama City (3 ½ hours from Chitre). There were 19 present. Monthly meetings are planned, with Cecilio teaching a course in leadership at the present. We trust that from this group, a solid work will be established in the City. These are mature students who were raised up in the church and are very loyal to their pastor and their Lord. Pray as we explore places for meeting and ways to work with these students.

Chitre Update Through the years several teams have visited this area, building in Chitre, Macaracas, and La Mesa. Sometimes you never see the work when it is completed. We want you to see the beautiful Chitre church. It is packed each week with a congregation that is really into the Word. Cecilio and Mayssin Cigarruista continue to lead this church and the conference.

Missionary to Chinese – Imelda Velasquez I remember as a small child hearing Rev. W. H. Turner tell about his experiences as a missionary to China. I especially remember him describing the “boat people.” Since we lived in Florida, in sight of the Intercoastal Waterway, I imagined the shrimp boats that I could see in the distance, were the boats across the ocean in China. I used to sit on the porch and watch the boats come and go, picturing the scenes he described. Here in Panama, we are in sight of the Pacific Ocean. While there are not “boat people” here, there are thousands of Chinese. Imelda Velasquez was saved through the ministry of the Chitre church. She later moved to Panama City where God has strategically placed her in ministry with the Chinese people of Panama, one of the neediest areas of ministry in the country. She teaches English in the Panama Christian School, a school which teaches in English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. Most importantly, the students receive the Gospel. Pray especially that as outreaches expand for the families of these students, many Chinese in this region will be freed from superstitions and accept Christ as Lord and Savior.

CEM Team. We were blessed to have the CEM team Led by Tommy Chester visit Panama in June/July. While we did not work directly with the team, we were able to be in the welcome group at the airport and with them for a final service and meal. It was good to lunch with Buck Hodges and Jim Jackson and talk about Emmanuel College days. Most of the group’s time was spent with the San Blas Kuna, indigenous people on the San Blas Islands on the Atlantic side of Panama. They worked hard and ministered to the people. We are grateful to Andreas and Kathy Fischer for much time of planning and ministry with this group.

Building Trip. In preparation for a team from River of Life Church in Oklahoma City led by Dan Clowers and Richard Goad, Hugh, Ron and Cody Sexton went to a village of the Ngoble Bugle Indians to put in a foundation for a new church. They worked for a week in a very remote and inaccessible area. It rained almost every day. It was a joy to work alongside the nationals under the direction of Jonathan Gamboa. Jonathan and his wife Maritza have done extensive work among the Ngoble Bugle as national missionaries from Costa Rica.
